Moving and Storage Conference, International Association of Movers and Worldwide ERC Urge Congress to include PII language in upcoming legislation

On January 20th the ATA Moving and Storage Conference, International Association of Movers and Worldwide ERC sent a letter to House leadership encouraging them include key legislative language that would protect Service Members personal identifiable information when moving internationally.

This has been a long standing issue for the moving and storage industry who has had blame unfairly placed on them when data breaches have occurred on Department of Defense personnel during the international move process. In 2021 the Senate passed United States Innovation and Competition Act of 2021 included industry supported language that requires Customs and Border Protection to scrub manifest data prior to the sale to data brokers.

Section 73005 of United States Innovation and Competition Act of 2021
‘‘(B) The Secretary shall ensure that any personally identifiable information, including Social Security account numbers and passport numbers, is removed from any manifest signed, produced, delivered, or electronically  transmitted under this section before access to the manifest is provided to the public.’’.

Collectively the three associations have been working on this legislation since 2017 and we strongly encourage the U.S. House of Representatives to include this important provision in their companion bill. Timing for the passage of the bill is unknown at this point but we will continue to monitor it's progress while advocating for the inclusion of timely PII language.
